Case of the Week

Return with a plan: optimized reintegration into working life

01 Situation

A 34-year-old electrician from central Switzerland had an unfortunate fall on his right shoulder during a private cross-country skiing trip. The X-ray revealed a dislocated clavicle fracture, which had to be surgically stabilized. As the patient is right-handed and works physically on various construction sites, a longer period of time off was to be expected.

02 Solution

Discussions with the employer were sought as early as the third week after the operation. Together with the employer, the doctor was able to arrange an adapted part-time job. The patient was able to take on e-mail correspondence, scheduling appointments and telephone calls - all without using the affected right hand.

03 Ability to work part-time

Thanks to targeted solutions and close cooperation, the electrician was gradually reintegrated into everyday working life:

  • Weeks 1-4: 0% unable to work
  • Weeks 5-8: 50% able to work (administrative activities)
  • Weeks 9-12: 60% fit for work (slightly adapted activities on the construction site, e.g. manual work without lifting over 5 kg or overhead movements)

04 Results

  • Improved project management: the patient was able to return to work on the construction site from week 9, allowing important processes to continue
  • Significant cost savings: CHF 15,000 - CHF 25,000 for the company
  • Reduction in days of absence: by a total of 25 days
